The breed got its name for having a broad “hippo” nose, thanks to its parent breed the Shar-Pei. The Mini Hippo Dog has a medium build with large eyes and loose, wrinkled skin. Country of Origin: United States of America History: The Mini Hippo Dog, also known as a Cocker Spaniel Shar Pei mix, got its name for having a broad “hippo” nose, thanks to its parent breed the Shar-Pei. The Cocker Spaniel were bred in England and can be traced back to the 14^th century. Translated to “Spanish dog,” the breed was brought to the United States of America in the 1620’s. The Shar Pei originated from a small village named Tai Lai, in the Kwangtung Province of Southern China. The ancient breed can be dated back to the Han Dynasty, around 200 B.C., statues that resemble the breed were discovered to be from that time. Registries: The Mini Hippo Dog, under the name Cocker Pei, is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), the Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC), the Dog Registry of America, Inc.
