Boston-Beagle Breed Information

Description: A Boston-Beagle is a small-frame breed mixed with a Beagle and a Boston Terrier. These dogs are loveable family pets who are petite in size and playful by nature. Boston-Beagle dogs have a muscular body, long legs, slightly protruding eyes, floppy ears and a square muzzle. They are known for being smart and kind people-pleasers.

Other Names: Boglen Terrier

Type: Crossbreed

Height: 12-17 in.

Weight: 20-40 lbs.

Colors: Common coat colors of this breed are a mix of brindle and white; black and white; and brown and white.

Coat: Boston-Beagles have a short, smooth coat that needs very little upkeep. These dogs don’t shed excessively.

Temperament: Family friendly is the best way to describe this breed. Boston-Beagles are social dogs who love learning new things and enthusiastic about training. Boston-Beagles only bark when they feel threatened but warm up to strangers easily. Beagle traits of being curious, persistent and protective commonly dominate in this breed. With Children: Boston-Beagles thrive on the attention of all family members, including little ones. They’re always up for a game of fetch and are patient with active children. These dogs get attached easily and become fiercely loyal and protective of their family. Boston-Beagles are safe to be around kids of all ages. With Pets: Their social nature makes them popular with other dogs on the street or in the house.

Watch-dog: Boston-Beagles are a breed with a protective streak, making them an excellent watch dog. They are known for being alert and are brave when warning their owner of danger.

Guard-dog: While they are protective, their petite size bars Boston-Beagles from being a successful guard dog.

Care and Training: The coat of a Boston-Beagle is simple to care for, only requiring a brushing once or twice a week. Their ears should be cleaned once a week and nails trimmed when needed. Since smaller dogs are prone to dental issues, owners are recommended to use dog-friendly toothpaste when brushing their Boston-Beagle’s teeth.

Learning Rate: Boston-Beagles tend to be stubborn and will take a little longer to pick up on basic household training as a puppy.

Obedience: Medium. Problem Solving: High. They have prominent Beagle traits.

Activity: Boston-Beagles are a highly active breed in favor of long walks and playing fetch.

Living Environment: Boston-Beagles can adapt to an apartment or home, as long as they can play in a fenced yard. All they ask for is love, affection and to not be ignored.

Health Issues: Common health issues for Boston-Beagles include joint dysplasia, obesity, skin allergies and dry eye.

Life Span: 10-13 years.

Litter Size: 1-10 puppies.

History: The Boston-Beagle breed is made by crossing purebred Boston Terrier and Beagles. The history of this designer breed is poorly documented. Breeders say that to understand the history of the Boston-Beagle, the history of their parent breeds must be known. Beagles, the breed Boston-Beagles get a lot of their personality traits from, are said to be from before the Roman times and were a mix between English Hounds and the Harrier. They came to the United States in 1642 and were recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885. Around 1870, a Bostonian man brought a dog mixed with Bulldog and English White Terrier into Boston and this is the original ancestor to the Boston Terriers. The dog’s name was Judge. The Boston Terrier was accepted by the AKC in 1893.

First Registered by the AKC: The Boston-Beagle is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, as it is considered to be a hybrid breed.
