Description: The Puggle breed is a mix of Beagle and Pug, originating in the United States circa 1980’s. The temperament of Puggles generally combines the active and inquisitive nature of the Beagle with the companionable nature of the Pug.

Coat: The coat of a Puggle is short and glossy.

Temperament: Puggles are playful, happy, alert and loyal dogs. They are people pleasers who are very loyal to their owners and get along with all members of the family. They like to play around but can gauge when it’s time to play and when it’s time to settle down. With Children: Puggles play very well with children. They are very patient with younger members of the family and are outgoing with all. They tend to show a lot of affection and energy to those who give it back to them. With Pets: Puggles are known for being very good with other dog breeds but are wary with household pets such as cats.

Watch-dog: The Puggle breed is known for being a great watch dog because of its alert nature and their ability to bark when something feels off.

Guard-dog: Although this breed is alert, they are not the first to take action in emergency making Puggles a weak guard dog.

Care and Training: Puggles are recommended to have weekly brushings to remove dead or loose hair. The folds in their skin need special attention after baths of when they are wet for whatever reason. If their skin folds remain wet for too long, they are prone to infection. Puggles are required to get at least 15 minutes of walks or play time daily to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Training should be done in fun, short intervals paired with positive feedback.

Activity: Moderate. As long as they can get outside for play, they will meet their needs of exercise.

Living Environment: The Puggle breed is ideal for those living in the city or apartment buildings.

Health Issues: Health concerns surrounding the Puggle breed are cherry eye, hip dysplasia and inherit progressive retinal atrophy.

Life Span: 10-15 years.

Country of Origin: United States of America

History: Puggles were the crossbreed that started it all. Wisconsin breeder Wallace Havens bred the first Puggle in the 1980’s, coining the name shortly after its creation. Havens was the first to register the crossbreed with the American Canine Hybrid Club. By 2000, Puggles were being sold commercially to pet owners wanting to own a different, distinctive dog.
